CRITIC AND WELL KNOWN POET

PROFESSOR MUZAFFAR HANFI

 Professor Muzaffar Hanfi is a great well known Urdu poet,writer and critic. During the last five decades he has produced valuable literature on modern poetry, short stories, satire, criticism, research, children’s literature and translations. Professor Hanfi has devoted himself to Urdu poetry and literature and has produced 80 books.

Muzaffar Hanfi was born on 1 April 1936 in khandwa (Madhya Pardesh) in India but his native place is Haswa Fathepur in UP. He has done B.A M.A L.L.B and P.H.D from Aligrah and Barkatullah University in Bhopal.

 

Professor Hanfi started writing poetry at the age of 14. Since then he has been continually writing without any interruption. In the last fifty years he has said more than 1700 Ghazals and has maintained his unique modern style and his poetry has been widely published all over the world in various Urdu magazines. He regularly participates in poetry events all over India, as well as out side the country. He often has been invited to preside seminars and mushairas in various states of India. Universities value his knowledge and expertise and invite him to take vivas from PHD students as well as in the selection panels. Many students have completed P.H.D under his guidance and supervision. He has also written more then 200 short stories and over 500 articles in his credit.

 

In 1959 he published first Modern urdu literature monthly magazine in India called Naye Chiragh (Modern Urdu ) of which eighteen issues were released appreciated by senior writers . Many Jadeed /Modern poets and writers introduced by this magazine. Shabkhun started 4 years later then Naye Chiragh. Muzaffar Hanfi’s first book Pnai ki Zuban considered pioneer of modern poetry book in India

 

Professor Hanfi had started his career from Forest department in Madhya Pardesh. He came to Delhi in 1974 and joined NCERT (National Council for Education and Training) as an assistant production officer. He became a lecturer in Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in 1976. In 1989 Calcutta University invited him and offered a well reputed post called Iqbal chair professor. Iqbal chair was set up in 1977 in kolkata university and first time was offered to Faiz Ahmed Faiz.He was interested to join but due to some delay in the appointment he became a Chief Editor of Lotus and went to Beirut. Iqbal chair was than vacant for at least 12 years and than professor Muzaffar Hanfi was appointed on this post first time in 1989. He had retired from Iqbal Chair professor in 2001 and moved back to Delhi. Where he has devoted to himself for poetry and literature.

FEROZE MUZAFFAR. THE BOOK CONSISTS OF A COLLECTION OF PAPERS AND ARTICLES WRITTEN ON PROFESSOR MUZAFFAR HANFI.
